Liturgy – 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

WELCOME TO OUR LITURGY: The power of office comes with baubles attached. Power demands to be noticed. The unofficial status of disciples of Jesus Christ comes with a warning against seeking power or its public face. Jesus knows it is human nature to want power and baubles. He tells us to be a servant, a person without standing in the community. There is plenty of power seeking subtly going on today. Am I part of that? Look to Mary today as the model of disciple.

First Reading:
Malachi 1: 14-2; 2-10.

14 Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished; for I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name is feared among the nations.
1 “And now, O priests, this command is for you.
2 If you will not listen, if you will not lay it to heart to give glory to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; indeed I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart.
8 But you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts,
9 and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.”
10 Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Liturgy – 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

WELCOME TO OUR LITURGY: Love is not a feeling but a faithful relationship with God. The prophet is a person who knows that everything in life hangs on this covenant of love. Today is a good day to look at the command to love myself. That means spending more time in prayer. It means a commitment to acknowledge that God loves my weaknesses. It means strengthening my love of God with fibres of rightful self-love.

First Reading:
Exodus 22: 20 – 26

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god, save to the LORD only, shall be utterly destroyed.
21 “You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
22 You shall not afflict any widow or orphan.
23 If you do afflict them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry;
24 and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.
25 “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor, and you shall not exact interest from him.
26 If ever you take your neighbor’s garment in pledge, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down;
